All BT broadband packages come with a complimentary BT Home Hub router to connect your devices to the internet. The latest model is the Home Hub 5 which is arguably one of the best routers available. The hub is much taller than the one it replaces, but shares a lot in common with its predecessor. At the back, there are four Ethernet ports , a USB port, a power in socket, a power on/off button, an RJ11 broadband socket and a factory reset button. The 5th generation Home Hub was released in mid-October 2013 and is an upgrade to the Home Hub 4, featuring Gigabit Ethernet connections and 802.11ac Wi-Fi and an integrated VDSL modem. BT Home Hub 5.0 Type A
BT is the last of the big internet service providers in the UK, after Virgin Media, Sky and TalkTalk, to introduce an upgrade to its router, more than two years after the last one, the Home Hub 5, came to market. BT has two hubs available right now and a host of older models that you might still have if you have an older plan. The two options in use are the BT Smart Hub and the Smart Hub 2. It uses smart scan tech, has four ethernet ports and has USB slots. However, it is only single band W-Fi so there is no support for 5GHz bands. This isn't the end of the world but it does mean it won't always be as fast for certain devices with 5GHz connectivity. The Home Hub 4 was supplied free of charge to new customers, with a £35 charge to existing customers. It has intelligent power management technology which monitors the hub functions and puts them individually into power-save mode when not in use.
Models and technical specifications
Now you need two wires for the input connection, one for +ve and other one is ground. Ground can be linked from any metal holders, just like the USB outer-panel. The +ve wire needs to come from the power adapter, for this to work properly use the middle pin on the power switch. This way when you power off the device the USB power will be switched off. The latest versions of the Home Hub are based on the Wi-Fi 802.11ac standard, and are also backward compatible with the 802.11b/g/n standards. All models of the Home Hub prior to the Home Hub 3 support VoIP Internet telephony via BT’s Broadband Talk service and are compatible with existing DECT handsets. BT no longer uses this hub but if you took out an older BT plan, you could well have this one.

I recommend keeping several versions around and symlinking them, so you can easily swap versions. For this to work, you need to remove the L9 component from the back of the USB port. This will break the connection from the USB + terminal and let you provide another power source. Once you have removed the above component, proceed to connect your circuit with the router. Choose a safe spot for the circuit to stay, possibly cover its base with some hot glue.
Unlike TalkTalk’s Super Router, which also delivers 802.11ac, BT’s router can hold its head high. Despite these points we have to say getting the Home Hub 5 up and running is very easy and even technophobes shouldn’t worry. The router’s user interface isn’t the most advanced we’ve seen and won’t give Linksys’ industry leading ‘Smart WiFi’ sleepless nights, but it is simple to navigate. BT also deserves credit for shipping the Home Hub 5 with a long 2m power cable, which gives a lot of flexibility when it comes to positioning the router. Linksys and Asus are leading the way here with routers that have no password but make you pick one in the setup wizard. That makes far more sense to us, though BT’s approach is consistent with previous Home Hub’s.

The Home Hub 5 does have a 2×2 arrangement for 802.11n/g, but at these slower speeds that doesn’t really matter. It is the last of these points which really grabs out attention though.
